Swim, Swim and more Swimming

No running, no biking - what I am supposed to do?  Swim, I guess.

Fortunately my daughter Erika bought me a great swimming book for Fathers day that I've been skimming.  Now it's time to really dig in.

Last week I did a lot of swim miles, then when I found out I won't be able to race, I didn't see much point in hitting the pool very often, so only made it to the pool once.  This isn't the right attitude, but I've got to find some motivation for doing more in the pool.

Time to set some swimming goals...

I swam with Masters yesterday and it seems like I can do some fast 50s.  Not sure how fast yet.

Listening to 'Nugget' by 'Cake' - kind of like it - 'shut the f** up' is the refrain.  nice.

Focus, Jesse, focus...

Swim goals.  Ok, I need to be able to do 1:15 100s.  Not just one, but 6 with a 15 second rest.  I am so far from this now, not sure how I get there, but a good goal.

What else?

Break 15 minutes on 1000 yards.  Yesterday I did 16:05 on a fairly easy 1000 yards.  That would be a big drop, but doable.

I'd like to get my Swolf score below 30 pretty consistently for 25 yards.  Swolf = time to get across the pool+#number of strokes. My watch uses every other stroke (or 1 full stroke cycle), so that is 9 strokes + 20 seconds.  I'm currently in the low 30s, but have yet to break 30, so a good goal.

What else?

Consistency, volume, and quality.  This is probably the most important bit.  Now if I train with Masters every morning I will get the first 2, but not sure if I will get enough quality in.  So 2-3 days with Masters.  Then 2-3 days solo or doing the workout with someone else.  1 endurance focus session, one skills focused session, 1 threshold session, 1 speed session.  Well, maybe combine some of these.

Testing - I need to have a standard set of tests to see if I am improving....
- Swolf score
- 100x6 with 15 sec rest pace
- 200x6 with 20 sec rest pace
- 300x4 with 30 sec rest pace
- 400 pace
- 1000 pace

I may want to come back to this, but just getting it down on paper.

A recent long swim:
